Trincomalee's topography is defined by its dramatic juxtaposition of flat, sandy coastal plains and sudden, rocky promontories. The most famous of these is Swami Rock, a precipitous cliff dropping hundreds of feet directly into the ocean, upon which the Koneswaram Temple is built.
The harbor itself is a remarkable topographical feature, created by submerged canyons and deeply indented bays, granting it exceptional depth suitable for nuclear submarines and massive cargo ships. Inland from the coast, the terrain remains largely flat or gently undulating, interspersed with numerous lagoons, estuaries, and floodplains associated with the Mahaweli River delta. There are no major mountain ranges within the district, though isolated rocky outcrops and hillocks, such as Orr's Hill, rise sharply from the plains.
