Safety

Trincomalee is generally a safe destination for both residents and international visitors, but standard precautions apply.

* **Emergency Numbers**: * Police: 119 * Tourist Police: 1912 * Suwaseriya Ambulance: 1990 * Fire/Rescue: 110 * **Crime**: Violent crime against tourists is rare. Petty theft, such as pickpocketing or bag snatching, can occur in crowded areas or unattended beaches. * **Ocean Safety**: While beaches like Nilaveli are calm, other areas of the eastern coast can have strong rip currents. Always heed local warnings before swimming. * **Wildlife**: When travelling on roads outside the city (especially toward Habarana), be aware of wild elephants crossing, particularly at dusk and dawn.
