Situated on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka along the Indian Ocean, Trincomalee District covers an area of roughly 2,727 square kilometers. Its geography is dominated by its legendary coastline and the expansive Trincomalee Harbor, which comprises a series of interconnected bays and inner harbors that naturally protect vessels from the Indian Ocean's volatile weather.
The district is predominantly characterized by coastal plains that stretch inland. South of the main city, the mighty Mahaweli Ganga—Sri Lanka's longest river—empties into the Indian Ocean near Mutur, enriching the surrounding soil. The region is rich in natural resources, particularly marine life, mineral sands (such as ilmenite and rutile found near Pulmoddai), and fertile agricultural land. Forest reserves dot the inland areas, transitioning into the dry zone ecology typical of Sri Lanka's northern and eastern reaches.
