Colombo features a tropical rainforest climate under the Köppen climate classification (*Af*). The weather remains consistently warm and humid throughout the year, with average high temperatures hovering around 31 °C (88 °F) and average lows around 24 °C (75 °F).
Rather than distinct summer and winter seasons, the climate is dictated by the monsoons. The city receives substantial rainfall, averaging over 2,500 mm (100 inches) annually. The heaviest rains occur during the Yala monsoon (from May to August) and the Maha monsoon (from October to January). Because of the frequent rains and high humidity, the best time to visit is typically from January to March, when the weather is driest and sunniest. Natural disasters are relatively rare, but the city does occasionally experience severe localized flooding during intense monsoon downpours.
