Despite its rapid urbanization, agriculture remains a vital part of life in the outer wards of the Pokhara metropolitan area. The fertile valleys and abundant rainfall make the region highly productive.
Rice is the staple crop, cultivated extensively in the terraced fields surrounding the city during the monsoon. In the drier months, farmers grow wheat, maize, millet, and mustard. Pokhara and the surrounding Kaski district are also famous for citrus fruits, particularly oranges, which are highly sought after across Nepal.
In recent years, organic farming and high-value cash crops have gained traction. Coffee cultivation is growing in the mid-hills, and local dairy and poultry farming operations are expanding to meet the demands of the city's large population and thriving hotel industry. Inland fisheries are also prominent, particularly around Begnas and Rupa lakes.
