Kerala experiences a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen: Am). Because of its proximity to the equator and the ocean, the state remains warm, humid, and relatively equable year-round. Average temperatures typically range from 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F) in the plains, though the eastern highlands are much cooler.
The state's rainfall is governed by two distinct monsoon seasons. The Southwest Monsoon (known locally as *Edavappathy*) arrives in early June and lasts until August, bringing the heaviest rains. The Northeast Monsoon (*Thulavarsham*) occurs from October to November, characterized by evening thunderstorms. The best time to visit is during the relatively cooler, drier winter months from December to February. Occasional natural disasters include severe flooding and landslides during intense monsoon years, most notably the devastating floods of 2018.
