The road network is dense, heavily utilized, and anchored by National Highway 66 running parallel to the coast. The Indian Railways' Southern Railway zone operates a thorough rail network connecting almost all major towns. Public transit is dominated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and numerous private bus operators. Kochi features a modern metro rail system (Kochi Metro) and a unique Water Metro system. Inland water transport is also maintained for both passenger ferries and tourism, heavily utilizing the backwaters.
