The population is highly diverse, reflecting its status as a pan-Indian pilgrimage destination and an industrial magnet. Hinduism is the dominant religion, practiced by the vast majority of the population, followed by a significant Muslim community, as well as smaller populations of Sikhs, Jains, and Christians. The official and most widely spoken language is Hindi, though Garhwali, Kumaoni, Punjabi, and English are also commonly understood and spoken. Haridwar has a strong literacy rate of over 85%, which is higher than the national average.
