Haridwar possesses a dual-engine economy, fueled equally by spiritual tourism and heavy manufacturing. Historically, the local economy relied almost entirely on the continuous influx of pilgrims, supporting a vast ecosystem of ashrams, hotels, tour operators, eateries, and local artisans. Religious tourism remains a bedrock, bringing millions of domestic and international visitors annually.
In modern times, Haridwar has transformed into one of Uttarakhand’s premier industrial hubs. The establishment of BHEL laid the foundation for heavy engineering in the area. In 2002, the creation of SIDCUL (State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited) brought tax incentives that attracted massive investments from national and multinational corporations. As a result, the city boasts a high concentration of manufacturing facilities, driving local employment and contributing significantly to the state’s GDP. The rise of Patanjali Ayurved has also made Haridwar a global center for Ayurvedic products and FMCG goods.
