Historically known as *Rangamati*, Udaipur is steeped in royal legacy. It served as the capital of the ancient Twipra Kingdom under the illustrious Manikya dynasty for several centuries. The city's golden era saw the construction of magnificent temples and vast water reservoirs (dighis) that were engineered to sustain the population and beautify the royal seat.
In 1501, Maharaja Dhanya Manikya built the iconic Tripura Sundari Temple, firmly establishing the city as a spiritual epicenter. Udaipur remained the capital until the mid-18th century, when frequent invasions by the Nawabs of Bengal and changing geopolitical pressures forced the royal family to shift their capital—first to Old Agartala and eventually to present-day Agartala.
Following India's independence and Tripura's integration into the Indian Union in 1949, Udaipur transitioned into an administrative and commercial hub. Today, it beautifully balances its modern civic duties with the preservation of its ancient, storied past.
