Cross-border trade with Bangladesh is a critical pillar of Agartala's economy. The Akhaura Integrated Cheque Post, located on the city's outskirts, is one of the most important land ports in India, facilitating the export and import of agricultural products, building materials, and consumer goods.
In recent years, there has been a concerted push toward developing the IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) sector, supported by improved broadband connectivity via an international gateway through Bangladesh. Agriculture processing, handlooms, and state-backed natural gas ventures also contribute to the local economic fabric.
