While Agartala itself is urbanized, the immediate surrounding areas and the broader state heavily rely on agriculture. The region is famous for producing high-quality bamboo and natural rubber, making Tripura the second-largest rubber producer in India after Kerala.
Rice is the staple crop cultivated in the plains and valleys surrounding the city. The area is also well-known for its horticulture, particularly the "Queen Pineapple," which is highly sought after and has even been exported internationally. Other notable crops include tea, jackfruit, and various vegetables. Fish farming (pisciculture) is also a significant agricultural activity, heavily integrated into the local diet and economy.
