The topography of Warangal is primarily flat to gently undulating, typical of the Deccan Plateau, with an average elevation of about 302 meters (991 feet) above sea level. This relative flatness is broken by sudden, prominent hillocks composed of solid granite.
The most famous of these is the massive rock formation at the center of the old Warangal Fort, giving the city its ancient name *Ekasila* (One Rock). Another prominent topographical feature is the Padmakshi Gutta (hillock) in Hanamkonda, which provides a sweeping panoramic view of the tri-city area and the surrounding lakes. The terrain gently slopes downward toward the southeast, dictating the natural drainage patterns that feed the historic reservoir systems.
