As of the 2011 Indian Census, the urban agglomeration of Warangal had a population of approximately 830,281, making it the second most populous city in Telangana. Factoring in subsequent growth and the expansion of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) limits, current estimates place the population well over 1 million.
The city boasts a healthy literacy rate of around 84%, higher than the national average, reflecting its status as an educational hub. The population is predominantly Hindu, with a significant and historic Muslim minority, alongside smaller Christian and Jain communities. Telugu is the primary and most widely spoken language, while Urdu is also spoken widely by the Muslim community. Thanks to the presence of national institutes like NIT Warangal, the city has a cosmopolitan student population drawn from all corners of India, bringing linguistic and cultural diversity.
