Rivers, lakes & waterways

Hyderabad's topography is defined by its historic rivers and a system of engineered lakes (cheruvus) built by the Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi rulers.

* **Musi River:** A tributary of the Krishna River that divides the historic Old City from the new city. While historically prone to flooding (notably the Great Musi Flood of 1908), it is today the focus of major urban rejuvenation projects. * **Hussain Sagar:** A heart-shaped, man-made lake built in 1562, featuring a monolithic 16-meter statue of Gautama Buddha standing on Gibraltar Rock in its center. * **Osman Sagar (Gandipet) & Himayat Sagar:** Twin reservoirs built in the 1920s to provide drinking water to the city and prevent flooding of the Musi River. * **Durgam Cheruvu:** Known as the "Secret Lake," this water body is tucked away in the modern IT corridor, now spanned by an iconic extradosed cable bridge.
