Chennai's civic infrastructure is managed by various state agencies. Electricity is primarily supplied by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), drawing from thermal, nuclear (Kalpakkam), and increasingly renewable energy sources.
Water supply and sewerage are handled by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB). Because the city historically relies on monsoon-fed lakes that are prone to drying out, Chennai has invested heavily in alternative water sources, notably large-scale seawater desalination plants in Minjur and Nemmeli.
Telecommunications and digital infrastructure are highly advanced. Chennai serves as a critical landing point for several international submarine fiber-optic cables, giving the city exceptional broadband capacity and making it an attractive destination for massive data centers.
