Transportation in Gangtok relies almost entirely on its road network, defined by National Highway 10 (NH10), which connects the city to Siliguri in West Bengal. Within the city, local transport is dominated by a highly organized system of shared and dedicated taxis.
There is no railway network within Gangtok; the nearest major railhead is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 120 km away. Air travel is facilitated by Pakyong Airport, located roughly 30 km south of the city, which offers flights to major Indian hubs, though it is subject to weather disruptions. The nearest major international airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal. Gangtok also features a scenic ropeway (cable car) that connects Deorali to Tashiling, serving both as a tourist attraction and a practical transport link across the steep elevation. Pedestrian pathways are well-maintained in the city center.
