Gangtok's infrastructure is tailored to its challenging mountainous terrain. Electricity is generally reliable, sourced primarily from run-of-the-river hydroelectric projects on the Teesta basin, though heavy monsoons can occasionally disrupt supply. The city's water is supplied largely from the Ratey Chu river, processed through the Selep water treatment plant.
Telecommunications and internet infrastructure are surprisingly robust for a high-altitude city. Major telecom providers (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) offer extensive 4G and growing 5G cellular coverage, along with fiber-optic broadband. Waste management is handled by the municipal corporation, which places a high emphasis on segregation and cleanliness, though finding adequate landfill space remains a geographic challenge.
