Government

Gangtok is governed locally by the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC), which is responsible for civic infrastructure, sanitation, and urban planning. The city is divided into multiple wards, each electing a councilor to the municipal body, which is headed by a Mayor.

As the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok is the seat of the state government. It houses the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, the Secretariat (Tashiling), and the Raj Bhavan (the official residence of the Governor of Sikkim). The city is well-policed and is known for its strict enforcement of civic rules, including bans on public smoking, plastic bags, and spitting, which contributes to its reputation as one of India's cleanest and most orderly cities.
