The lack of large-scale manufacturing within the city limits—due to topographical and environmental constraints—means the economy is heavily reliant on the influx of domestic and international tourists. However, the wider East Sikkim district features a growing pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, which provides significant employment to Gangtok residents. The cost of living in Gangtok is relatively high for the region, primarily due to the logistical costs of transporting goods up the mountains.
