Geographically, Yanam is an enclave situated within the Godavari river delta. It is bounded on all sides by the Kakinada and Konaseema districts of Andhra Pradesh, save for its eastern edge where it is deeply influenced by the tidal waters of the Bay of Bengal. The region covers a compact area of just 30 square kilometers.
The defining geographical feature of Yanam is the confluence of the Godavari River and its distributary, the Coringa River. This riverine geography makes the land highly fertile and supports nearby mangrove forests, specifically the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, which lies just across the border in Andhra Pradesh. The region is predominantly a coastal plain, marked by estuarine conditions where freshwater mixes with saltwater during high tides.
