Culturally, Yanam is a fascinating anomaly: it is politically and historically tied to Puducherry (and thereby France), but ethnically and linguistically tied to Andhra Pradesh. The spoken language is Telugu. The town preserves elements of its French past in its street names, colonial architecture, and legal history. Traditional Telugu arts, literature, and classical dance (Kuchipudi) flourish here, often showcased during local festivals and government-sponsored cultural programs.
