Economy

Mahe's economy is distinct from its neighbors, largely driven by its unique tax status as part of Puducherry.

Historically, the most notable economic driver was the retail of alcohol and fuel, which enjoyed significantly lower taxes than in the surrounding state of Kerala, though GST implementation has slightly normalized some of these differences. Tourism, particularly heritage and religious tourism, contributes to the local economy.

Remittances from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) working in the Middle East (the Gulf countries) form a crucial pillar of the regional economy, sustaining high living standards and fueling local consumption and real estate. Fishing remains a traditional and vital occupation for the coastal communities.
