Arts & culture

Mahe's culture is a unique hybrid of North Malabar Malayalam traditions and residual French colonial influence.

* **Literature:** Mahe is immortalized in Malayalam literature as "Mayyazhi." It is most famously the setting for M. Mukundan's masterpiece novel, *Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil* (On the Banks of the River Mayyazhi). * **Theyyam & Thira:** Like the rest of North Malabar, Mahe's Hindu temples host *Theyyam*, a vibrant, highly localized ritualistic dance form involving elaborate costumes and trance-like performances. * **Architecture:** French influence is still visible in the grid layout of some older streets, the police station, the Administrator's residence, and colonial-era villas.
