Due to high population density, rapid urbanization, and a total land area of just 9 square kilometers, traditional agriculture in Mahe is extremely limited.
The remaining agricultural activity is mostly confined to small household plots and homestead gardens. Crops consist primarily of coconut, areca nut, and small quantities of spices like black pepper. There is no large-scale commercial farming. Instead, the primary food production industry relies on marine and river fisheries, which provide a steady supply of seafood to the local population and neighboring Kerala.
