Safety

Auroville is generally a very safe and peaceful community, though standard travel precautions should be observed.

* **Crime Overview:** Violent crime is extremely rare. Petty theft (such as bicycle or scooter theft) and minor property crimes occasionally occur, often related to the porous borders between the township and surrounding villages. * **Auroville Safety & Security Team (ASST):** An internal community watch and security service that handles immediate localized issues and coordinates with local police. * **Emergency Numbers:** * National Emergency: 112 * Ambulance (Local): 108 * Police: 100 * Auroville Security (Internal): Specific internal extensions are provided to residents and guests upon arrival. * **Safety Tips for Visitors:** The most common safety hazard is road accidents involving two-wheelers. Visitors should drive scooters/motorcycles slowly on the dirt roads. The area is heavily forested and very dark at night; carrying a flashlight and watching for wildlife (including snakes) is highly recommended.
