Auroville has a residential population of approximately 3,300 people, representing over 60 different nationalities. Indian nationals make up the largest single demographic, comprising around 45% of the population, followed by significant numbers of French, German, Italian, American, and Dutch citizens.
The population demographic is relatively balanced in terms of gender and includes a mix of families, single adults, and elderly pioneers. By design, Auroville belongs to no specific religion, and traditional religious practices are generally replaced by a shared focus on spiritual evolution and human unity. English is the lingua franca of the community, though Tamil (the local regional language) and French are widely spoken and taught.
