Auroville has been a pioneer in decentralized infrastructure. While connected to the Tamil Nadu state electricity grid, the township generates a substantial portion of its own energy through extensive solar photovoltaic installations and wind turbines.
Water is sourced primarily from underground aquifers using borewells, with aggressive community-wide rainwater harvesting systems mitigating depletion. Sewer and wastewater are largely managed locally through ecological systems, such as Root Zone treatment plants, decentralized bio-digesters, and constructed wetlands. The township operates its own high-speed broadband network and an internal internet portal called "Auronet."
