1. Auroville was founded on February 28, 1968, by Mirra Alfassa, affectionately known as "The Mother." 2. During the inauguration ceremony, youth representing 124 nations and 23 Indian states placed a handful of soil from their homelands into a lotus-shaped urn. 3. The city's spiritual and physical center is the Matrimandir, a giant golden sphere surrounded by twelve petals and gardens. 4. The Matrimandir does not belong to any religion; it is meant as a place for silent concentration. 5. Inside the Matrimandir lies the "Inner Chamber," housing the world's largest optically perfect glass globe, which is illuminated by a single ray of sunlight. 6. Although heavily associated with Puducherry (Pondicherry), the vast majority of Auroville's physical land area is actually in the Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu. 7.
