Environment

Environmental restoration is one of Auroville's greatest success stories. Founded on a barren, highly eroded laterite plateau in 1968, the land has been transformed into a lush, thriving ecosystem.

* **Air Quality:** Generally excellent, benefiting from the dense forest cover and lack of heavy industry, though seasonal agricultural burning in surrounding regions can temporarily affect it. * **Afforestation:** Over 3 million trees have been planted since the community's inception, creating the diverse "Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest" ecosystem. * **Water Conservation:** Extensive earthworks, bunds, and check dams have been built to prevent monsoon runoff, allowing water to percolate and recharge the underground aquifers. * **Protected Areas:** The Matrimandir Gardens and various designated "green belts" act as protected ecological zones. * **Sustainability & Recycling:** Auroville is a hub for eco-friendly practices, including organic farming, vegan communities (like Sadhana Forest), earth architecture, and comprehensive recycling programs.
