Bhubaneswar features a tropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classification *Aw*). The city experiences three primary seasons: a sweltering summer, a heavy monsoon, and a mild winter.
Summers (March to June) are hot and highly humid, with peak daytime temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C (104°F) in May. The southwest monsoon arrives in June and lasts through October, bringing intense rainfall—averaging about 1,540 mm (60 inches) annually—which cools the city but can cause waterlogging in low-lying areas. Winters (November to February) are highly pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C (59°F to 82°F), making it the best time to visit.
The city is geographically vulnerable to powerful tropical cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal, most notably enduring catastrophic winds during Cyclone Fani in May 2019, which caused extensive damage to the city's tree cover and infrastructure.
