Bhubaneswar is located in the eastern coastal plains of Odisha, lying along the axis of the Eastern Ghats mountains. The city sits on the southwestern bank of the Kuakhai River, a distributary of the great Mahanadi River. It is situated southwest of Cuttack, separated by the river system, forming a twin-city metropolitan region.
The city's western borders are fringed by the Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary, a dense forest area known for its elephant reserve, which provides a green buffer and acts as the city's lungs. The soil is predominantly lateritic in the uplands and alluvial in the river valleys, supporting a lush, green urban environment heavily populated by mango, jackfruit, and banyan trees.
