Wokha is located in the mid-western part of Nagaland, bordered by Assam to the west, Mokokchung district to the north, Zunheboto district to the east, and Kohima and Tseminyu districts to the south. The physical geography of the town is characterized by its rugged, hilly terrain, deeply etched by valleys and river systems.
The broader district is defined by its rich biodiversity, featuring dense sub-tropical and temperate forests that support a wide variety of flora and fauna, including orchids, bamboo, and timber species. The most significant hydrological feature in the region is the Doyang River, the largest river in the district, which flows through deep gorges before entering the plains of Assam. The creation of the Doyang Reservoir has heavily influenced the local geography, forming a massive inland water body amidst the hills.
