Located in the southeastern part of Nagaland, Phek shares its borders with Myanmar to the east, Manipur state to the south, Kohima district to the west, and the Zunheboto and Kiphire districts to the north. The geography is spectacularly rugged, characterized by a series of parallel hill ranges, deep gorges, and narrow valleys that dictate the layout of human settlements.
The district is drained by three major rivers: the Tizu, the Lanye, and the Sedzu. The Tizu River is particularly significant as it flows eastwards into Myanmar, joining the Chindwin River, unlike most other rivers in the state which flow westward into the Brahmaputra system.
Phek is blanketed in rich sub-tropical and temperate forests. The region's flora includes valuable timber species, rhododendrons, and a vast array of orchids. Natural resources encompass limestone, decorative stones, and minor minerals, alongside rich biodiversity that includes the Blyth's tragopan, barking deer, and hornbills.
