Transportation

Getting to and around Kohima requires navigating its mountainous landscape. * **Roadways:** National Highway 2 and National Highway 29 connect Kohima to Dimapur (the commercial hub) and Manipur. The city roads are winding and often experience heavy traffic due to limited space for expansion. * **Public Transit:** Brightly colored local mini-buses (often known as "city buses") and shared taxis are the primary modes of public transport within the city. * **Air & Rail:** Kohima does not currently have its own airport or railway station. The nearest functional airport (Dimapur Airport, DMU) and major railhead are located in Dimapur, about 74 kilometers (a 2.5 to 3-hour drive) away. An airport for Kohima is currently under long-term planning. * **Walking:** Due to the steep terrain and traffic, residents frequently use a network of pedestrian steps and footpaths that cut directly up and down the hillsides to bypass winding roads.
