According to the 2011 Census of India, the city of Dimapur had a population of approximately 122,834, while the larger Dimapur district had a population of roughly 378,811. Given rapid urbanization and rural-to-urban migration, the current population is estimated to be significantly higher.
Dimapur is the most cosmopolitan city in Nagaland. While the indigenous Naga tribes (such as the Angami, Sema, Ao, and Lotha) form a major part of the population, the city has a very high percentage of non-Naga residents, including Bengalis, Assamese, Marwaris, Biharis, and Punjabis.
Religiously, the city is diverse. Christianity is the predominant religion, especially among the Naga population. Hinduism is the second most practiced religion, followed by Islam and Jainism. Nagamese, a creole of Assamese, serves as the primary *lingua franca* binding these diverse communities together, alongside English and Hindi.
