Unlike the rest of Nagaland, which is characterized by steep, rugged hills and mountainous terrain, Dimapur is located in the plains of the Brahmaputra Valley, specifically in the Dhansiri River valley. The city is bordered by the state of Assam to the west and north, and the Kohima district to the east and south.
The Dhansiri River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra, flows gracefully along the eastern side of the city, serving as a natural boundary in certain areas and providing vital water resources. The relatively flat terrain makes Dimapur an anomaly in Nagaland, allowing for easier construction, agricultural expansion, and the development of transportation infrastructure.
The region's geography transitions from completely flat plains in the western and central parts of the city to gentle foothills in the east, leading up to the majestic Patkai mountain range.
