The topography of Serchhip is predominantly mountainous, characterized by a series of parallel north-south ridges separated by narrow river valleys. The town itself is built along the crest and slopes of a major hill ridge, at an average elevation of 888 meters (2,913 feet) above sea level.
The steep gradients of the hillsides make flat land a rarity, heavily influencing local settlement patterns and road construction. Down in the valleys, particularly the Mat River valley, the topography flattens out just enough to form small but vital floodplains that are extensively utilized for wet rice cultivation and the planting of cash crops.
