According to the 2011 Census of India, the town of Serchhip had a population of 21,158, while the wider Serchhip district housed 64,937 residents. The most notable demographic statistic is its literacy rate, which stood at a staggering 98.76% for the district—the highest in India at the time of the census.

The population is overwhelmingly made up of the Mizo people, an indigenous Tibeto-Burman ethnic group.
