According to the 2011 Census of India, the town of Lawngtlai had a population of 20,830, though current estimates place it higher due to rural-to-urban migration within the district. The population is predominantly composed of the Lai people, a recognized Scheduled Tribe in India, alongside other Mizo sub-tribes and a small minority of non-tribal residents.
The community is overwhelmingly Christian, with denominations such as the Baptist Church of Mizoram and the Presbyterian Church being the most prominent. Consistent with the rest of Mizoram, Lawngtlai boasts a high literacy rate—well over 90% in the town—reflecting a strong cultural emphasis on education. Mizo and Lai are the primary languages of daily communication, while English is widely used in administration and education.
