Lawngtlai operates under a unique dual-governance structure. As a district headquarters of the Government of Mizoram, it is administered by a Deputy Commissioner who oversees state law and order, general administration, and central development schemes.
Simultaneously, Lawngtlai is the capital of the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC). Empowered by the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, the LADC functions as a localized mini-government. It has its own elected representatives (Members of the District Council or MDCs) and executive committee, holding legislative and executive powers over subjects like land management, forest conservation, agriculture, public health, and the preservation of customary laws. At the grassroots level, local governance is managed by Village Councils in various neighborhoods.
