The economy of Lawngtlai is historically rooted in agriculture, but the town itself relies heavily on the administrative and service sectors. As the seat of both the district government and the LADC, public sector employment is the largest driver of the local economy.
In recent years, the economy has seen a shift due to the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. This massive infrastructure initiative is generating employment in construction, logistics, and retail. As the highway to the Myanmar border nears completion, Lawngtlai is positioning itself as a future commercial hub, which is already leading to an increase in small businesses, local contracting, and trade.
