Kolasib is a vibrant hilltop town and the administrative headquarters of the Kolasib district in the northernmost part of Mizoram, India. Positioned near the border with the state of Assam, it acts as a crucial northern gateway to Mizoram. Virtually all road-based goods and passengers entering the state from the rest of India pass through this district via National Highway 306 (formerly NH 54), making Kolasib a vital transit and commercial hub.
Unlike the more precipitous landscapes found in central and southern Mizoram, the terrain surrounding Kolasib boasts river valleys and comparatively gentler slopes, which has allowed the region to develop into the agricultural powerhouse of the state. The district is celebrated for its lush plantations of betel nut, oil palm, and expansive rice fields.
Beyond its agricultural and commercial significance, Kolasib is noted for its scenic beauty. The town is bordered by the pristine waters of the Tlawng River and the Serlui River. The nearby Serlui B Dam has not only bolstered the local power supply but has also created a stunning reservoir that is increasingly drawing eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts.
