Kolasib is widely considered the "rice bowl" of Mizoram. The relatively flat lands and river valleys allow for wet-rice cultivation, unlike the slash-and-burn (jhum) shifting cultivation practiced elsewhere in the state.
Major cash crops include betel nut (areca nut) and oil palm, which have seen significant government support and expansion in recent decades. The district is also a major producer of ginger, rubber, and various fruits such as oranges and bananas. Furthermore, the serene reservoir of the Serlui B Dam has become a hub for pisciculture (fish farming), providing a fresh source of fish to Kolasib and Aizawl.
