Agriculture

Agriculture in and around Hnahthial consists of a mix of traditional Jhum (shifting cultivation) and increasingly adopted sedentary farming practices. The steep topography limits large-scale mechanized farming, so most agriculture is labor-intensive.

Major crops include paddy (rice), maize, ginger, turmeric, and various seasonal vegetables. Horticulture is highly successful in the region, with farmers cultivating pineapples, bananas, oranges, and hatkora (a local citrus). Additionally, animal husbandry—particularly pig rearing and poultry—plays a crucial role in the local food supply and rural economy.
