Agriculture

Agriculture in Champhai is renowned throughout the state. The flat valley floor allows for extensive wet-rice cultivation, a rarity in a region where shifting (jhum) cultivation on steep slopes is the norm. This high yield of rice is what earned Champhai the title of "The Rice Bowl of Mizoram."

In recent decades, horticulture has seen a massive boom. Champhai is a leading producer of grapes, passion fruit, kiwi, and apples. The local government and agricultural boards have actively promoted viticulture, leading to the establishment of commercial wineries that have provided farmers with a lucrative cash crop. Organic farming practices are common, both by tradition and through state initiatives.
