Aizawl is centrally located in the northern part of Mizoram, stretched along a prominent ridge that runs north to south. The physical geography is defined by steep, undulating hills and deep river valleys. The city is flanked by the Tlawng River valley to the west and the Tuirial River valley to the east.
The surrounding environment is rich in sub-tropical biodiversity, with dense, green vegetation covering the hillsides. Because the city is built directly onto the slopes of the ridge, the geography dictates its unique linear layout, where roads wind closely along the contours of the mountains. Natural resources in the surrounding areas include extensive bamboo forests, timber, and rich sandstone deposits.
