Agriculture

While Aizawl itself is an urban center, agriculture plays a crucial role in the immediate outskirts and the wider district. Traditional shifting cultivation (Jhum) is being gradually replaced by more sustainable terrace farming and horticulture.

Major crops grown in the surrounding areas include ginger, turmeric, passion fruit, pineapple, and hatkora (a local citrus). Floriculture is a thriving commercial activity, particularly the cultivation of anthuriums and roses for export outside the state. Livestock farming, specifically piggery and poultry, is widespread among suburban households for both subsistence and local markets.
