According to the 2011 Census of India, the Tura municipality had a population of 74,858, though modern estimates suggest the greater urban agglomeration has since surpassed 100,000 residents. The population is relatively balanced between genders, with a slight majority of males in the administrative zones.
The ethnic composition is overwhelmingly indigenous, with the Garo tribe forming the vast majority of the population. There are also smaller communities of Hajongs, Koch, Bengalis, Assamese, and Nepalis who primarily engage in commerce and government service.
Christianity is the predominant religion, followed by the vast majority of the Garo population (primarily Baptist and Catholic denominations). Minorities practice Hinduism, Islam, and the traditional animist Garo faith known as Songsarek. Tura boasts a high literacy rate of over 91%, significantly above the national average, reflecting the region's strong emphasis on education and the historical impact of missionary schools.
