Geography

Tura is located in the western part of Meghalaya, an area characterized by a dramatic and rugged landscape. The city lies at the base of the Tura Range, a prominent geographic feature of the West Garo Hills district. Surrounded by dense, subtropical broadleaf forests, the environment is rich in biodiversity, supporting a wide array of endemic plant, bird, and animal species.

The geography of Tura is deeply defined by its lush vegetation and vital watersheds. The Ganol River and its tributaries flow near the city, providing essential water resources and shaping the surrounding valleys. The proximity of the Nokrek National Park and Biosphere Reserve, located just a few dozen kilometers away, heavily influences the region's ecological identity, serving as a vital sanctuary for the endangered Hoolock Gibbon, red pandas, and wild elephants.
